The Heights – Houston Neighborhood Overview
The Heights is one of Inner Loop Houston’s Hottest Neighborhoods as well as a popular Historic District that dates back to the late 1800s.
The Houston Heights is wonderfully unique in every way. “The Heights,” as it is called, even looks different from the rest of Houston with period and reproduction Victorian structures and Mission bungalows nestled among some pf Houston’s most innovative restaurants and shops. This subdivision offers emerging schools and a strong community that maintains historic sites, enforces deed restrictions, manage the constable program, and plans many annual events like Lights in the Heights Tour.
It is Northwest of Downtown and offers easy commuting to Downtown, The Medical Center, The Galleria Area and major Houston Highways. It is also ranked amongst the Most “Walkable Houston Neighborhoods” and is also among the top communities in the state for “Fun Family Activities” with outdoor spots like Heights Hike and Bike Trail and White Oak Bayou Trail nearby.
The changes that swept Houston’s Inner Loop in recent years have, not surprisingly, been interpreted differently in The Heights. New construction is controlled by the scarcity of available land and the effectiveness of residential deed restrictions. Urban professionals favor the Heights and families who appreciate its quality of life and short commute to downtown.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Heights is enjoying a vibrant revival and strong upsurge in home values. Existing homes are often extensively renovated and updated while new construction is encouraged to conform to neighborhood vernacular styles. Prices on existing bungalows and cottages begin in the high $200,000s and range upward depending on location, condition, and lot size; recent and new construction prices range from around $500,000 to well upwards of $1 million.
